Unfortunately, we finished 2nd in the overall points for the year. The early season gremlins that plagued us for the first part of the season, created an immensely huge deficit. Unbelievably the team came from way behind in the points to nearly take our third championship in a row. Twelve finishing position’s over the course of the season was the difference in points.

Welcome to ShaneCity Racing;
On September 15th at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe WA. An event took place that was completely and utterly disgusting. Shane was waiting in line to use the Honey Bucket out-house, another driver #51 John Zaretzke exited the Honey Bucket and Shane entered and closed the door. Immediately after he closed the door, someone pushed the Honey Bucket from behind tipping it over onto its door trapping Shane inside covered in filth from the rapidly draining tank. Other competitors rushed to his aid as John Zaretzke and his teammates walked off.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 15th SHANE FINISHES A VERY DISAPPOINTING 2nd PLACE TO END THE SEASON ALSO 2nd PLACE IN POINTS.
The team was still excited after winning four in a row and hoping for its 5th in a row though it was not to be. The difficulties started earlier in the day and continued through the day. The problems started with team going trough it’s initial tech and was found to be too wide on both fenders with them sticking out beyond the maximum limit past the tires. While not normally an issue it was also an easy fix. The team practiced the car and in a single practice session Shane found the car to be exactly to his liking.
In qualifying we found ourselves having problems in the tech line, in the process of narrowing both fenders, it has dropped the height of the bottom of both fenders below the minimum allowable dimension. A quick adjustment for the height changed our setting on the maximum dimension the nose can stick out from the centerline of the front wheels. After finding a happy medium for all of the adjustments we passed through tech and on to qualifying. Shane was only able to make a single lap in qualifying as the rules state your if you cannot pass tech on the 1st pass through you are only eligible to make a single lap. Shane ran a 23.592 well bellow the fast time set by Lex Johnson who ran a 23.242 in his second lap.
Before the start of the race, an event took place that was completely and utterly disgusting. While its unknown as to who the exact individual was that pushed the Honey Bucket over. It most certainly is an individual known to the driver John Zaretzke. A rapidly growing reward fund has been established to help convince any persons that has knowledge of who guilty person. This sizable reward will make it worth their while to do so. Please call Mickey Beadle at (360) 805-6100 ext 56100. If you would like to contribute to this fund or collect it by turning in the perpetrator of this despicable crime.
An incredible thank you must go out to Cowboy John Carlson. John graciously offered the use of his own brand new driving suit. This suit he had just used in his own race in which he had won his race and in doing so clinched the Super Figure Eight championship.
The 150 lap main event with its invert had Shane starting on the inside of the 6th row. Shane’s race plan for the night was to make slow calculated moves ahead while conserving his tires for the end of the race. I will post the remainder of the nights racing on Friday.

Saturday September 1st SHANE WINS FOUR IN A ROW!
The team excited after their third win in a row, was quite enthusiastic in looking for a possible forth win in a row. In bringing a well prepared car to the track, the team once again skipped the first practice session which allowed themselves some extra time for Shane’s crew chief Joe to go over the car making sure it everything was absolutely perfect. Shane went out for the 2nd practice finding the car absolutely perfect in handling. With the car needing no adjustments the team prepared the car for qualifying in hopes of setting fast time for the 4th week in a row.
Shane went out early in the qualifying session, his 1st lap was a disappointing 18.015 seconds, then followed it up with a very improved 2nd lap running 17.594 seconds. As the qualifying session completed for the rest of the cars, we found ourselves once again having set fast time for the 4th week in a row, which is our 7th fast time this season.
The invert for the night was a 10, which put Shane starting on the outside 5th row. Shane made quick work in moving forward taking the 7th position on lap three before the caution came out for the #76 Roger Habich. Going green on lap seven Shane moved passed both #22 Lex Johnson and #11 Mike Holden to take the 5th position on lap seven. On lap ten Shane passed the 2nd of the two Holden brothers #12 Jeff Holden. Lap thirteen saw Shane moving by #00 Naima Lange for the 3rd position. Shane maintained a spirited battle with his fellow Canadian driver # 28 Chris Preston for many laps, getting by Chris on lap twenty-three to take the 2nd position in the race.
Lap twenty-nine had the red flag waving for the #12 Jeff Holden who had an extremely hard crash on the front stretch. Shane had been running a number of laps side by side with the #4 of Darin Stordahl, when the caution and red flags waived the scoring loop had Darin slightly ahead of Shane.
Restarting the race on lap thirty-two somehow the officials mistakenly placed the lapped car of #11 Mike Holden between Shane and Darin. While it was a source of frustration, it made little difference in the outcome as Shane was able to get by both Jeff and Darin on lap thirty-three to take the lead.
The race remained green with Shane leading until lap forty when #70 Jeff Knight spun bring out a very lengthy caution with the officials struggling to get the cars in correct running order. The green flag waved again only to have the yellow waive again on lap forty-six to bring out another very exceptionally long caution while the official’s once again tried to figure out the running order for the lapped cars in the back of the pack. This set up for a green-white flag restart with Shane being hotly pursued by the #51 John Zaretzke who upon the restart was able to comfortably drive away from to take the checkered flag for the 4th time in a row, our 5th win of the season.
We return to Evergreen Speedway to complete our season on the big track. We will be racing 150 laps on the big 5-8's mile track. Also running will be the very fast NSRA winged sprint cars and the Super Figure Eight championship night. We look forward to seeing you there.
Saturday August 25th SHANE WINS THREE IN A ROW!
The team arrived with one thing on their mind; win their third race in a row. The team skipped he first practice session which allowed themselves some extra time to go over the car making sure it everything was absolutely perfect. Shane went out for the 2nd practice finding the car almost perfect in handling. A minor adjustment was all that we need to make him very happy with the handling.
In qualifying Shane set fast time for the 6th time this season running his 2nd lap in 17.433 seconds. Shane holds the track record on the 3-8’s mile at Evergreen Speedway when he ran 17.278 seconds for the crate motored cars at the beginning of the season on April 28th.
A ten-car invert had Shane starting on the 5th row outside lane. The start of the race had for some very intense racing as it stayed side by side until the first caution that came out on lap eight. Despite the close racing, Shane had made quick work in moving through the field to the 4th position when the yellow flag flew. Going back to the green on lap eleven, Shane moved past # 28 Chris Preston to take 3rd as the yellow came out after only one lap. The yellow flag was for #53 Doug Wilkinson sliding off the track in turn four. When the green flag flew Shane made quick work in passing both #12 Jeff Holden and #4 Darin Stordahl to take the lead on lap sixteen. From that point on Shane cruised comfortably until lap thirty-two when the caution came out for the 2nd place car of Darin Stordahl who had his distributor fail. With the green flag waiving again on lap thirty-five Shane quickly made a gap between himself and the 2nd place car #22 of Lex Johnson. A debris caution came out on lap 46 for a muffler that was lost on the track. The restart was uneventful with Shane once again pulling away from the 2nd place finisher Lex Johnson who was followed by #00 Naima Lang.
Shane and the team were incredibly excited to win their fourth race of the season and three races in a row during the month of August.
With two races remaining we have a very close points race in our desire to win are third championship in a row. We will be on the 3-8’s mile again this weekend, which is the final weekend of the Evergreen State Fair
We look forward to seeing and hearing our fans cheer us on this weekend.

May 19th Race results.
Results for Saturday May 12th.
The frustrating season continues. Shane for the third time this year has set fast time of the day in qualifying, and at the same time ran the fastest laps in the main event, only to come away without a win.
Shane and his team brought a meticulously prepared car to the track with high expectations of collecting their first win. Shane went on to set fast time of the day at 17.598 seconds on Evergreen Speedway’s 3-8’s mile track.
In the main event an invert would have Shane starting in the 10th position. Shane made consistent moves through the field; by lap 12 overtook the #4 of Darin Stordahl for 3rd place. Unfortunately on lap 16 as Shane was making a pass down low under the #22 of Lex Johnson, contact was made between the two which resulted in Lex spinning and Shane being black flagged for the contact.
Shane not to be deterred in getting his first win for the season made quick work again in moving up though the tight pack of cars. On lap 35 Shane had moved to the 7th position, while making an aggressive pass for the 6th position Shane spun coming off of turn three bring out the caution as Shane went a lap down before getting the car turned around. Another caution on the restart used up more valuable laps needed for Shane to move up through the field of cars, the green finally flew on lap 44 leaving only 6 laps to improve our finishing position. Shane was able to pass a large number of cars quite rapidly unfortunately all but one, were lead lap cars.
Shane finished the race the fastest car on the track but in a very disappointedly 13th place.

Shane Finishes 2nd with a very I’ll handling car.
Gremlins continue to trouble the Shane Harding racing team. This past weekend we brought our favorite Port City racecar to Evergreen Speedways 3/8’s mile track. The car freshly rebuilt after last weekends terrible crash was once again very fast in practice. Shane was able to run any line he wanted whether it be low or high, the car was fast in both.
For the main event, Shane’s qualifying position was 2nd fastest for the day. A 12 car invert would have him starting in the 11th on the inside 6th row of the 18 car field.
The team was excited as with a perfectly handling racecar and Shane’s expert driving, we could break our drought of four races with no wins. This race may have set a record for cautions; we had 7 cautions resulting in 23 laps of yellow flag racing, nearly half the race ran under the yellow.
In the first lap chaos broke out with cars ahead making contact and spinning Shane made some very aggressive maneuvers to avoid cars ahead and ended the first lap in the 6th position. When the race returned to the green flag racing on lap four, Shane started moving ahead, and on lap 9 had moved into 3rd place. This was about the same time a shock started going bad. Despite the problem with the shock Shane continued on closing the gap with the 2nd place car of #87 Travis Powell. Shane passed Travis on lap14 to take the 2nd position. Shane’s car was much faster on the long green flag runs which were very rare during this race.
Shane was able to close the gap on the leader #51 John Zaretzke, but with he cars poor handling he had only one attempt to make the pass before the final caution of the evening presented itself. A green/white flag restart gave Shane only one lap to make the pass. This wasn’t enough time, as Johns restarts gave him a one car length lead on Shane to take the win with Shane right behind.
This coming weekend May 12th, we will be at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA looking for our first win of the year.
April 28th, 2007 Results.
Shane breaks the track record he set last week.
At Evergreen Speedways 3/8’s mile track this past weekend, Shane broke last weeks fast time and track record with another even quicker lap to once again set the fast time and track record at 17.278 seconds for the crate motored Superstock division. Shane's lap time was a full half second faster than the 2nd fastest qualifier of the #00 Naima Lang.
Racing on a warm sunny day with no chance of rain made for a great day at the track. The team made a number of changes to the racecar during practice. Each time the car went out on the track consistently faster. For the main event the team sent Shane out with much anticipation of a good finish for the night. Unfortunately it was not to be the finish we were looking for.
An eight-car invert would have Shane starting on the outside of the eight row. By lap two Shane had worked his way to 5th before the caution came out. The lineup for the restart was set by the transponder-scoring loop on the front stretch. Shane was required to restart the race in the 7th position. When the green flag flew the field was tightly bunched, only three more laps were run before the caution flew again. Unfortunately the caution was caused by the spinout of the #55 car of John Ross who was sitting sideways on the track with cars running three wide coming directly at him. Heavy contact was made between Shane and John's car resulting in heavy damage to both cars. Shane's team made quick repairs, with Shane returning to the track at lap 41 of the 50 lap race. Shane was able to gain a few positions finishing the race in the unlucky 13th position.
April 21st 2007 Results.
Shane sets track record and finishes 2nd in the 50 lap Superstock race.
On Evergreen Speedways 3/8’s mile track this past weekend. Shane sets fast time in qualifying and at the same time sets a new track record for the crate motored Superstock division. Shane ran his 2nd lap in a time of 17.427 seconds.
We returned to racing on a cloudy, slightly muggy day this past weekend in which the team was happy for after last weekend’s rainout. It made for an easy day at the track. Shane ran the car for two short practice sessions and was pleased with the car, as no adjustments were needed.
Shane started the race in 9th and moved into 7th on the 1st lap. Unfortunately with it being early in the race, all the cars were racing two wide, Shane fell back to 9th as the outside line of cars moved ahead faster than the inside line of cars. The racing moved into mostly single file racing by lap four with Shane being able to find room to start passing cars. Shane returned to the 7th position on lap 7, on lap 13 he would overtake the #22 car of Lex Johnson. A lap later he would overtake the #4 car of Darin Stordahl and on the next, pass the 00 car of Naima Lang to take the 4th place position.
Shane spent the next 10 laps working on getting around the #76 car Roger Habich to move to 3rd place well behind the #9 car of Kelly Mann. It took 16 laps for Shane to close the gap on Kelly and then make the pass for 2nd behind former track champion John Zaretzke. While Shane was able to quickly close the gap between him and the lead car in only four laps, that was all that remained of the race, Shane would have to settle for 2nd place for the night.
This finish puts Shane and John Zaretzke in a two-way tie for 2nd place, behind point leader Kelly Mann in the Superstock division.
We look forward this coming weekend’s expected sunny weather at Evergreen Speedway to put Shane in the winner’s circle for the first time this year.

Saturday July 28th 2007 5-8’s mile race results.
Shane and his dedicated race team returned to Evergreen Speedway after last week’s rainout. Once again we were on the big 5-8’s mile track for a 100-lap race. The team had engines problems during the first practice that caused us to miss much of the remaining practice sessions. With the problem being intermittent and not fully sure of what it really was (fuel or ignition). We changed a number parts hoping the problem was fixed. We sent Shane out to for the last few laps of practice and he was very happy with the cars and it’s handling.
Shane qualified 5th running a 23.528 second lap. The invert for the day was a ten-car invert, which put us starting in the 5th position third row on the outside. The start of the race was uneventful, Shane dropped into the 6th position running a conservative line saving his tires for later. Shane moved to 5th on lap 21 after passing the car the #35 car of Rob Touchette. As the long green flag run continued Shane moved by #76 Roger Habich on lap 36, and then overtook the pole sitter #4 Darin Stordahl on lap 50 to take 3rd place. Shane remained in 3rd place on the longest green flag run of his career all the way to lap 78. The restart of the race on lap 81 was very scary as Shane went to pass on the inside of the lapped car of #12 Jeff Holden at the start finish line, just as the #51 car of John Zareretzke broke and pulled along the outside of Jeff Holden which resulted in the cars being three wide going into turn one at full speed. Fortunate for all it worked and no contact was made.
This moved Shane into the 2nd position though a fair distance behind the leader #9 Kelly Mann. Shane narrowed the gap on he leader just as the 2nd caution came out for debris on the track. The race went green on lap 93 with Shane putting heavy pressure on the leader, while at the same time under heavy pressure from the car behind him #22 Lex Johnson. Going into turn one on lap 97, a hard nudge from Lex shuffled Shane up the track which allowed himself and the #35 car of Rob Touchette to get by which moved Shane to the 4th position where he would finish out his night. The team was really looking for a podium finish as we moved back into 2nd place I the standings being within striking distance of regaining the point lead in our next race.
Next up for the team is the biggest race of the year, The Washington 500. Shane will running the longest race of the year 150 laps on the 5/8’s mile at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe Washington. We look forward to seeing you early, as the qualifying starts at 1:30 and racing starts at 5:15 PM. The Bombers are racing a 50 lap main event prior to us, and the NASCAR Grand National West Division is racing 300 laps after us.
Saturday July 21st 2007 the rain won once again, our third rainout of the year. We return to racing this weekend for a 100 lap race on the big 5-8's mile at Evergreen Speedway.
Saturday July 7th 2007 5-8’s mile race results.
The ShaneCity race team returned to Evergreen Speedway’s big 5-8’s mile track with excitement after last weeks win. The team sent Shane out to qualify, with us in the pits expecting him to set fast time. We were fast in qualifying, but not fast enough for fast time. He had missed it .100 of a second running a 23.445 second lap around the 5-8’s mile track on a hot and muggy day.
The track rules require the previous weeks winner to start near the rear of the field just ahead of the racecars that were more than one second slower than fast time. This had Shane starting in 11th on the inside 6th row.
The start of the race was uneventful on the big track as Shane maintained his position saving his tires for later. On the 10th lap Shane passed competitor #35 Rob Touchette for 10th position. On lap 20 the caution came out as the 6th place running car #4 Darin Stordahl blew a tire hitting the wall hard in turn one. This moved Shane up to the 9th position.
After the restart Shane passed the #00 of Naima Lang on lap 24, and then passed both #11 Mike Holden and #70 Jeff Knight on the following lap to take over the 6th place position. On lap 35 Shane Passed #76 Roger Habich and then on lap 42 passing the #12 Jeff Holden who had started on the pole. With Shane running in the 4th position running a slower but comfortable pace saving his tires for later in the race things were looking pretty good for the ShaneCity race team. Shane maintained his pace and position all the way until lap 70 when the caution came out for the 2nd time.
The timing of the caution was perfect for us as it gathered the field, setting Shane up for a dash to the front with the green flag flying on lap 75. Unfortunately chaos broke out on the restart. There were a number of slower lapped cars in the front of the field. This combined with the rules allowing passing on either side of the cars ahead of you. It’s hard to say if it was this passing on both side or if it was one of the cars towards the front of the pack missed a shift or both. The results were many damaged racecars including ours. Though our car wasn’t as severely damaged as others, the toe-in adjustment on the steering was knocked out of alignment creating a severe handling problem. The green flag waived once again on lap 78 with Shane running in 3rd position, he relinquished his position on lap 84 to the hard charging #35 Rob and then lost one more position a lap later to #22 Lex Johnson.
The team having a respectable 5th place finish was a little frustrated as the car was perfect on the long runs, with us looking forward to a podium finish.
The team is taking a well-deserved weekend off from racing. We return to the big 5-8’s mile track again on July 21st this will be most definitely a night to come out and watch racing. The traveling series North American Big Rig Racing will be racing on the same night. Click on the link to check it out. If you have never seen them it’s worth coming out for.

Shane dominates Mid-Season Championship Night!
The ShaneCity race team celebrated the end of June with a their first win of the season after nearly winning last weeks race. Shane ran only a single lap in qualifying nearly setting fast time in the process. Shane missed the pole by .001 seconds running a 17.530 second lap. The invert draw was 6 which had Shane starting on the inside third row.
The start of the race was very intense with two called off starts due to the cars not being paired up as they took the green flag. The third time was a successful start to the race; Shane made quick work in moving up the field. Shane passed the #76 car of Roger Habich on the first lap to take 4th. He gained another position on 2 laps later in passing the #12 of Jeff Holden. After a quick caution the green flag waved on lap 7 and Shane quickly made the pass on #00 Naima Lang to take 2nd. Shane spent the next four laps side by side with #28 Chris Preston before taking the top spot and the lead on lap 11. Shane sent the rest of the race anticipating pressure that never came. He was anxious for a win and went very conservative with the car to make sure nothing broke. He maintained a front stretch lead until lap 46 when the caution flew. On the restart a lap car between him and the 2nd place car of #76 Roger Habich made for a nice clean run to take the checkered flag.

Leading last lap only to finish 12th!
On a day with the team shorthanded on crewmembers, very high expectations were held as we had made some dramatic changes to the car in practice and felt we had the car top beat. In qualifying we just missed out on setting fast time by .059 seconds, which didn’t distract us from expecting a win. The invert had Shane starting the race on the outside fourth row in 8th position. On the 1st lap of the race Shane passed both the #76 of Roger Habich and the #00 of Naima Lang. Shane passed the #91 of Scott Sarto on the following lap and the #53 pole sitter Doug Wilkinson one lap later. On lap 6, took 3rd place after passing the #48 car of Tom Hughes. Shane remained in there until lap 24 when he passed the 2nd place #4 car of Darin Stordahl. On lap 32 Shane passed the race leader #22 Lex Johnson to take the lead.
While in all appearances it was looking very good for the Shane Harding race team there was extreme focus on the track, as from lap 3 until the final lap fellow competitor and current point leader John Zaretzke was close up tight to Shane on most laps. While Shane was able to pull away from John most of the race, lapped cars would narrow the gap. A caution on lap 47 would set-up a one-lap shootout. On lap 50 the racing resumed with the green/white flag both being given at the same time. Hard contact was made between Shane and John Zaretzke coming off of turn 2, both cars came to a stop off the track in turn three. Only John was able to return to the track with Shane being unable to continue due to a broken steering rod arm. While Shane was able to lead for a season high of 18 laps, he was unable to be leading the most import one the final lap.
Once again we will be on our favorite track the 3/8’s mile at Evergreen Speedway. We look forward to seeing you there!
Saturday June 16th results on the big 5-8’s mile track.
Shane finsihes a disapointing 5th.
Shane started the race in 7th on the outside row. Shane was not able to make it to the inside grove until lap 7 by which time he had fallen all the way back to the 11th position. At this point Shane was able to start making forward progress picking off the #53 car of Doug Wilkinson on lap 8. It wouldn’t’ be until the 22nd lap before he passed the pole sitter #11 Mike Holden. A yellow flag on lap 24 dropped a number of cars to the back, pushing Shane up to the 7th position. The restart on lap 29 was short as the caution flew again on lap 31. The track went green on lap 36 with Shane making a pass on the inside of fellow Canadian Driver #28 Chris Preston. Unfortunately for Chris in his anxiousness to give Shane room on the inside he failed to give himself enough room and the outside as he brushed the wall in tirn4 spinning to the infield making hard contact with the infield jersey barrier to end #28’s day early.
The race restarted on lap 44 only to have the caution immediately come back out due to oil on the track, after long caution the race restarted only to back to yellow due to oil still being on the track. The race would finally go to green on lap 58, Shane overtook the #00 of Naima Lang for 5th position where he remained until lap 79 when he passed the 4th place #76 car of Roger Habich. Shane remained in 4th until the restart after the final caution of the night brought out a green/white restart for a one-lap dash to the checkered flag. Unfortunately Shane spun the tire on the ensuing restart, which allowed the #76 car of Roger Habich to pass him resulting in a disappointing 5th place finish for Shane and his team.
The Saturday June 9th, races were cancelled due to persistent rain showers and the forecast for heavy rain throughout the afternoon and evening. We return to a big week of racing this coming weekend with 100 laps on the big 5/8’s mile at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA.
June 2nd 2007 race results.
An incredibly frustrating, yet fun weekend.
Our frustrating season has continued, despite us purchasing a brand new engine for this coming weekends race. A persistent water leak forced us into changing the new motor before we had run a single lap on the track. We give a great many thanks to the guys from Speedway Chevrolet for the assistance they have provided that past two races.
Speedway Chevrolet had our original motor rebuilt and ready to race when we arrived at the track. After another rushed engine change, we missed all of the afternoons practice sessions and we proceeded directly into qualifying. This was an atypical race day of others, as it was the day the teams were supposed to all start racing on the new Hoosier tires. Unfortunately for most the desired tire sizes didn’t show up as promised and most teams struggled to find the desired tire stagger need for the race. Most were close to what they wanted but not the optimum dimension for most. The track announced that any teams that wanted to use the existing Goodyear tire from their tire inventory would be allowed to do so for this race and the next race.
In our experience with other compounds of the Hoosiers tires, the lap times fall off tremendously after the first couple of laps. A decision was made that we would gamble and run the previously raced Goodyear tires from our tire inventory rather than the new Hoosiers with the less than optimum stagger. It was a gamble that went array quite immediately. On a very hot day at the track with the temperature being in the mid 80’s the Hoosiers tires performed flawlessly for the other teams, and our Goodyear tires struggling to find grip. We qualified 12th running a 17.977 lap which is the worst qualifying we have had in many years.
Since the track rules require you to race on the same tire you qualify on, we were committed with no alternative than to race on the Goodyear’s. We received no benefit from the invert, which left us starting the race in the 12th position on the outside of the 6th row. Due to the Goodyear tires, Shane was relegated to race with extreme patience and the ultimate goal being not to win the race, but to gain as positions as possible while avoiding any contact with other cars to bring home the race car in perfect condition.
Shane gained a position on lap 2 avoiding contact while avoiding contact with the spinning car of #00 Naima Lang. After the restart on lap 5 Shane maintained his 11th place position until the 4th place car #22 Lex Johnson spun off the track, which moved Shane up a position to 10th. On the ensuing restart cars just ahead made hard contact, Shane while avoiding hitting those cars lost a number of positions in the process. This avoidance in damage dropped Shane back to the 13th position where he remained until lap 29 when he passed the #87 of Travis Powell. On lap 34 cars ahead of Shane made contact bringing out the 3rd caution of the night, with those cars moving to the back, this moved Shane the 10th position. On lap 43 Shane would overtake the #70 car of Jeff Knight for the 9th position, which is where he remained until lap 50 taking the checkered flag.
Shane succeeded in avoiding all contact bringing home the car in pristine condition. We will being working overtime this week making sure the car is absolutely perfect condition, making sure that none of the gremlins that have plagued us this season return.
We look forward to seeing you this coming weekend, where we will be on the 3/8’s mile track at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington.
Can you be disappointed in a third place finish?
Yes you can. We arrived at the track hoping for a smooth day and a win. Sometimes things never go as planned, nor as hoped for despite extensive planning and work to make sure everything is ready. While warming up the engine before first practice the engine's oil pressure went to zero. Trouble shooting determined it wasn't an issue with the oil pressure gauge but with the engine itself. The team pulled together and made a quick engine change that was completed just barely in time for qualifying.
Due to the problems with getting new properly sized tires from Goodyear all the teams were required to use two four year old race tires and two of there used tires from previous races. While they were in new condition the aging process left them in an unpredictable hardness condition. The failed engine caused the team to miss all practice and left us in a significant disadvantage for qualifying. Shane qualified the worst he had in many years, an embarrassingly 12 place effort at 18.426 second run. With no practice and us guessing what the for year old tires would do we missed our tire stagger dimensions by a large amount. In the final 10 minute practice before the start of the race we hit the correct stagger, with us running a full second quicker at 17.419 seconds on the 3/8's mile track.
The invert for the start of the race was ten and with Shane qualifying 12th, he was forced to start in the 6th row. On lap one a number of cars in front wrecked with Shane also being hit. This caused significant damage to the front of the car. While the car was structurally sound, the aerodynamics were not, resulting in very slow progress moving forward through the field of cars. On lap 9 Shane moved into 7th place after passing the #53 car of Doug Wilkinson. By lap 22 Shane had worked his way to 4th and then the final move ahead on lap 34 over took the #76 of Roger Habich to move into 3rd place where behind the #00 of Naima Lang. While Shane was able to close the gap on Naima, the aerodynamics of the damaged front end of Shane's car prevented him from being able to make the pass. The team would finish the race in third place once again frustrated.
The Shane Harding race team takes this coming Memorial weekend off for a much needed break. We resume racing on Saturday June 2nd back at Evergreen Speedway on the 3/8' mile track.
Saturday August 18th SHANE WINS AGAIN!
Shane and his team came to the track prepared to back up last weeks win with another. Shane still recovering from his injuries that occurred in a boating accident on August 5th, needed very little track time to confirm the car was to his liking. This allowed the team extra time to go over every aspect of the car making sure it was ready for the intense battle on the track later in the evening.
Qualifying went well and for the 2nd week in a row Shane set fast time running a 17.636 second lap on the very weather worn 3-8’s mile track of Evergreen Speedway. The mandatory random invert had Shane starting 9th on the inside of the 5th row. The start of the race was very intense, as the cars remained stacked up and side by side until lap ten when the #70 car of Jeff Knight spun bringing out the caution. This left us running in the 7th position as inner line of cars was moving faster than the outer line of cars. We went back to the green flag on lap fourteen only to have the yellow come out again on lap seventeen for the spinning #4 Darin Stordahl.
Going back to the green on lap twenty lasted only a single lap as the yellow flag flew again after hard contact with #22 of Lex Johnson and the #12 Jeff Holden who sailed off the backstretch nearly into the deep culvert/beaver pond that is in-between the 5/8’s mile track and the 3-8’s mile track. Lex Johnson received the black flag for the incident and was moved to the back of the lead lap cars.
The green flag waived again on lap twenty-four with Shane in 4th where he spent the next nine laps in a very spirited battle for position with #76 Roger Habich of which Shane finally got by on lap thirty-two. All the while Shane was battling for position with Roger, the same was occurring directly in front of both between the drivers of #00 Naima Lang and his pursuer #51 John Zaretzke. Light contact between the two cars resulted in the #51 spinning to the infield.
Restarting the race on lap thirty-six, Shane being 2nd and in hot pursuit of the leader #00 Naima Lang, Shane would make the pass on the inside of Naima as they approached a slowing car in the center groove of the track. The caution came out as the lapped car blew a tire just as the leaders where coming to it. Unfortunately the scoring loop on the front stretch had Naima leading at point and Naima was given the position back. The green flag waived on lap forty-six with Shane making the pass to take the lead two laps later. Shane finished out the race pulling away running laps about ½ a second faster than the 2nd place finisher of our friend #00 Naima Lang.
With a very tight points battle and our team firmly entrenched in the battle for first place we look forward to seeing our fans this weekend. We will be on the 3-8’s mile track at Evergreen Speedway.
Saturday August 11th 2007 3-8’s mile race results.
Shane wins his 2nd race of the year depite being injured in a boating accident.
Shane and his team arrived at the track nervous about the day ahead. Shane had injured himself the weekend before and wasn’t sure if he would be able to compete. Shane ran only 6 laps of practice and announced he had the perfect car, though he was very much in pain, he would be racing.
In qualifying Shane set fast time despite being in severe pain running a 17.581 second lap. A 10-car invert had Shane starting on the outside of the 5th row. On lap 4 Shane moved past #51 John Zaretzke, and past the #53 Doug Wilkinson and #4 Darin Stordahl. A debris caution brought out the yellow flag on lap 9.
Shane restarted in 6th position on lap 12 and was a man on a mission. Shane moved by #76 Roger Habich on the following lap, and passed # 28 Chris Preston two laps later to take 4th place. On lap 16 passed the #70 Jeff Knight to take 3rd place and on lap 22, moved by #22 Lex Johnson for 2nd place. Lap 28 would see the caution flag for the spinning #28 Chris Preston.
On the ensuing restart, the race leader #11 Mike Holden overdrove the car into turn one allowing Shane to easily make the pass and take the lead. From that point on Shane maintained a very comfortable lead the remainder of the race. Shane maintained as much as a straightaway lead over the 2nd place car of #11 Mike Holden to take the checkered flag for his 2nd win of the year.
In winners circle, while being very celebratory, it was somewhat muted as Shane was in incredible pain needing assistance to get out of the car.
We return to the 3-8’s mile at Evergreen Speedway this weekend with renewed vigor to follow-up our win with another. We look forward to seeing you there.
Saturday August 4th 2007 5-8’s mile race results.
Our consecutive record of races without a DNF was stopped at 61. A broken rod-end ended our chance of a podium finish on lap 148, only 2 laps from the end of the race.
Numerous glitches added up for a terrible day for Shane and his team on a day that looked very promising in practice. In qualifying Shane went out and just as the green flag was to wave the black flag waved as fellow competitor #51 John Zaretzke had failed to completely clear the track after his qualifying run. Shane was required to wait about ten minutes before attempting to qualify again. Unfortunately the heat cycle that was already put in the tires with its resulting tire stagger growth made for a terribly handling car. Shane ran a 23.623 second lap on the big 5-8’s mile, which resulted in him being the 6th fastest qualifier. Shane was intent on setting fast time for the day and the extra laps ruined the chance for doing so.
To make the day worse, Shane’s crew chief Joe Ploegman was much later than anticipated in arriving at the track due to him being flagman on a boat inside the racecourse of the SEAFAIR Hydroplane races. With Joe not at the track, this prevented him from doing his normal detailed inspection of the car prior to race time. Unfortunately, this missed opportunity by Joe likely contributed to the teams first DNF since July 2003. The string of races without a DNF stopped at 61 races this day.
The invert had Shane starting fourth on the outside of the 2nd row. The start of the race went well with Shane moving to 2nd on the 1st lap right behind #51 John Zaretzke who had started on the inside 2nd row next to Shane. On lap 8 the caution came out after hard contact was made between the cars of #00 Naima Lang and #35 Rob Touchette. Naima’s car was very badly damaged, and unfortunately he was done for the day. The restart on lap 17 had Shane momentarily falling back to 3rd after being passed by the #12 of Jeff Holden though Shane regained the position on the next lap. Shane held the 2nd position until lap 33 when he waived the #76 car of Roger Habich and the #22 Lex Johnson to pass him as he dropped back to the 4th position. Shane was concerned he may have a tire going down as the car was developing a handling problem that was quite erratic.
The caution came out on lap 43 for debris, and returned to green on lap 46. Another debris caution waved on lap 51 going back to green on lap 55. On the ensuing restart Shane lost a position to #35 Rob Touchette for a couple of laps and regained the 4th position on lap 57. On lap 88 the spinning #70 Jeff Knight brought out the 5th caution of the night. The green waived on lap 95 and flew again on lap 108 as #27 Geoff Bodine lost his engine oiling the track. Going green on lap 112 was short as the yellow came out again on lap114 for the #22 Lex Johnson after his rear axle caught fire. On lap 120 we went green only to have the yellow waive on lap 124 #9 Kelly Mann’s hard wreck into the turn 3 wall after contact with #35 Rob Touchette. After being given the black flag, Rob was moved to 9th place in the rapidly shrinking field of cars, which had started 19 cars at the beginning. Returning to green flag racing on lap 130 with Shane in 3rd, he started battling for position in the tight field of cars, unfortunately for Shane his podium 3rd place finish evaporated in a cloud of tire smoke as a rod end on his rear axle’s panhard bar broke on lap 148. This made us pit with no time for repairs to get us back on the track. This DNF broke our outstanding consecutive record of 61 races without a DNF in Evergreen Speedways highly competitive Superstock late model division.
The #51 John Zaretzke went on to win the race followed #35 Rob Touchette and 3rd going to #76 Roger Habich.
Many thanks go out to Rex Morgan, who is Pete Harding’s Crew chief and to Sam Mar, Pete’s tire guru who both stepped in to cover for Joe earlier in the day.
We return to our favorite 3-8’s mile track at Evergreen Speedway on August 11th.
We look forward to seeing you there.
April 14th 2007 Results.
The April 14th Superstock race at Evergreen Speedway on the 3-8's Mile, was won by "Heavy Rain Showers"
We arrived at the track with the car rebuilt from the terrible impact sustained in the opening day trophy dash crash. With the car straight off the trailer, Shane was very fast in practice, a minor glitch with a leaking power steering hose was the only excitement of the day, as shortly after it was fixed the sky turned into a 30 minute long torrential downpour to soak the track. As the day turned into evening the track was starting to dry out. The Bomber B main showed the track was almost dry as they were running both the top of the track as well as the bottom groove. A short time later the rain returned to end our chances of racing.
We will be back to race again this coming weekend, on the 3-8's mile track of the Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington.
MARCH 31st SEASON OPENER at Evergreen Speedway on the 5-8's Mile.
The NASCAR WHELEN ALL AMERICAN SERIES 2007 Evergreen Speedway season opener on the big 5/8’s mile speedway was a night we all were looking forward to. It was a day filled with great excitement, hard work, huge disappointments, and in the end a little bit of satisfaction.
Despite ominous clouds overheads the weather stayed dry, by early afternoon the sun came out making for a very nice day at the track. Shane and his ShaneCity race team unloaded a very well prepared car. The new crate motor performed for the team as advertised it ran flawlessly. In practice all things went well with lap times at the top of the speed charts with lap times equivalent to the engines we have raced in the past.
Late in the afternoon one of the other drivers at the track Chris Preston #28 asked for assistance troubleshooting a problem with their engine. While we were able to assist them in determining what the problem was, unfortunately for them the engine problems were quite severe requiring a last minute engine change. Speedway Chevrolet supplied a leased replacement engine and had it to our pits quite quickly. We assigned three crewmembers (Tom Gapp, Trevor Hunter and Geoff Marples) to assist in changing the engine. They were able to complete the engine swap just in time for Chris to make the main event.
In qualifying Shane qualified 4th fastest which would put him in the trophy dash. The trophy dash, which took place just after opening ceremonies, would prove to be disastrous. On the first lap coming out of turn four with Kevin Hamlin on the inside and Shane on the outside, Shane was squeezed up into the debris on the outside of the track. The tires unable to hold traction in the marbles caused Shane to get loose, resulting in slight contact to Kevin’s car and then a tremendous impact into the front stretch wall.
Shane took the obligatory ride in the aid unit while the car was towed to the pits. The cars damage turned out to be significant. A bent frame rail, bent rear axle and punctured oil pan would end our chances of racing this car, as the start of the race was less than an hour away.
A spare racecar isn’t an option for most teams at this level of racing; it appeared that our race-day was over. Unbeknownst to Shane, the #28 John Ross team and his rookie driver Mike VanDongen were holding a team meeting. They were deciding on whether to continue their nights racing with Mike VanDongen or let Shane use the car to help him make a bid for his third super late model championship. The John Ross team and driver Mike VanDongen with heavy emotions decided it was more important for Shane to have the opportunity to race for his third championship. Our team is extremely grateful to the Jon Ross team and Driver Mike VanDongen for allowing us to use their car as they had many friends and family on hand to see Mike get his rookie his first start in a very fast Late Model Racecar on the big 5/8's mile speedway. Shane accepted the offer to drive John’s brand new racecar, with very little time remaining a few changes were needed to the car to allow Shane to race. Shane was required to use the tires he had qualified on, except two were destroyed in the accident so new tires had to be purchased. This put our stagger into unknown territory.
With the change in cars Shane was required to start in last place. Shane made quick work in moving though the field and by lap 7 he was in 9th place, by lap 10 he moved to 7th where he would remain until lap 26 as he moved to 6th. With the cars very spread out and few cautions, it took much time to narrow the gap between the cars ahead. Shane picked them off one at a time and by lap 38 he had moved to 4th place. Shane had a significant distance to close in on the 3rd place car of Roger Habich. Shane was able to catch up to Roger, unfortunately as he closed the gap between the two cars, the rain started to steadily fall on lap 89 bringing out the caution and ultimately the checkered flag as the rain continued to fall. Shane would finish the race in 4th place happy to have finished the race and deliver the borrowed racecar back to John without a scratch.
We look forward to our next race on April 14 at Evergreen speedway when we return to the smaller but favored track of ours the 3/8’s mile.
